Two tourists were killed in a crash involving a campervan and a truck north of Whangarei on Tuesday morning.
As emergency services tried to clear State Highway 1, long queues of traffic built up north and south of the crash scene, which is about four kilometres north of Towai.
The police said a man and woman from Europe were in a campervan that collided with a freight truck and trailer unit on a bend just past the Motatau turn-off.
A mother and child in a third car following the campervan were treated for injuries at Kawakawa Hospital.
