The Public Service Association says it will hold the Minister of Education to account if any children are badly affected as the result of the closure of an Auckland residential school.
The minister, Anne Tolley, has decided to close Waimokoia School, which caters for children aged between seven and 13 who have behavioural difficulties.
Mrs Tolley says there is a long history of problems in the way the school has been run.
She is promising a new service for the 35 Waimokoia students who, she says, will now receive individualised support and therapy in their homes and in their local schools.
But the PSA says the children can't go to mainstream schools because their behaviour makes them a risk to other children.
