Health warning on beach toxin remains

9:16 am on 25 October 2009

The Auckland Regional Public Health Service is reminding people to watch out for poisonous sea slugs on beaches in the Hauraki Gulf over Labour weekend.

Scientists have discovered the slugs contain the deadly toxin, tetrodotoxin, believed to have caused the deaths of six dogs and various marine life.

In the most recent case, earlier this month, a dog died on Tapu Beach on Coromandel's west coast.

Medical Officer of Health Dr Simon Baker says beachgoers need to be aware of the potential risk to children and pets.

Dr Baker says the warnings will be downgraded in time, providing there are no more occurrences.
