Dunedin town hall to close for a year

9:12 pm on 21 October 2009

Dunedin's town hall will be closed for twice as long as initially planned, during its $45 million redevelopment which starts next year.

It will be closed for about 13 months from next June, rather than the six months originally planned, which means pre-booked events will have to be cancelled or relocated.

The Dunedin City Council says an extended closure is needed because of the large amount of equipment that will have to be housed in the Town Hall during the construction period.

Five university graduations and a New Zealand Symphony Orchestra performance are among the 12 bookings confirmed for the period.

The town hall is expected to reopen in July 2011 and the redevelopment completed by 2012.
