Restoring power may take days yet

The power company Unison says some of its customers should ready themselves for a number of days without power.

Heavy snow has been causing havoc in rural regions around Napier and Taupo, bringing down a number of powerlines and closing State Highway 5, the Napier-Taupo road.

Unison spokesperson Danny Gough said Tuesday afternoon that at present 410 of its customers were still experiencing outages.

About 100 of its customers could spend Tuesday night without power, he said, and for those in Tarawera, Pohokura and Ngapata it could stretch to a few more days.

The company says a line that services most of those households has fallen into the Mohaka river and a helicopter is needed to winch it out.
