Police are thanking members of the public who helped after a fatal crash on the Waikato Expressway, including performing CPR on the victim.

A person was killed in the crash near Hampton Downs on Friday.

Police said a black SUV was travelling north during a period of heavy rain when it rear-ended a northbound truck and trailer.

One of the car's occupants got out and was struck by another vehicle travelling in the southbound lane.

Despite desperate attempts to save them, the person died at the scene.

Police on Sunday appealed to any witnesses to the crash to come forward, as their information "could provide valuable assistance to the crash investigation".

That included dash-cam footage, police said.

"If you have video footage, please provide an email address and Police will forward a link to simply and safely upload video from your device."
