Dunedin student flats to be given ratings

A voluntary accreditation and star rating system is being developed to try to improve the standard of Dunedin's run down student falts.

Under the system, flats will receive a rating out of five stars and those achieving a high enough standard will get accredited status.

Landlords will fill out a series of questions about their properties, and Otago University Accommodation Services director James Lindsay says random audits will ensure the details provided are accurate.

Mr Lindsay says the voluntary scheme will act as an incentive for landlords, and provide students with important information about flats at a glance.

He says students will know that accredited accommodation has met a certain standard.
