State Highway 36 near Tauranga remained closed on Monday after a rockfall on Thursday crushed a vehicle and left two women injured.
The New Zealand Transport Agency had hoped the road known as Pyes Pa would be reopened by the start of the week, but national highways manager Kaye Clark said assessments revealed the road was still too unstable to be used.
She expects the agency will know after midday on Tuesday when the road is likely to be open again.
