A 10-year-old girl has died after being swept down a creek in Fiordland, police say.
Emergency services were called about 11.40am after being alerted to the girl falling into the fast-flowing Marian Creek.
The girl was with family on holiday from Australia.
She was found and taken out of the water a short time later, police said.
CPR was performed but she was unable to be revived.
"This has been a traumatic event for those involved and police are providing whānau with support," Southland Area Commander Inspector Mike Bowman said.
"We would like to extend our sincere condolences to them.
"Police would like to thank all those involved, in particular the members of the public who assisted in locating and providing assistance to the young girl."
Southland mayor Rob Scott expressed his sadness over the tragedy, and said it was a huge tragedy for all involved.
Scott described the river where the girl died as "unforgiving".
"It's a pretty harsh environment," he said.
"We're in the middle of summer but it is very cold out there too and it's a strong flowing river.
"It's not a nice calm environment, but it is well frequented by visitors as well and is a beautiful part of the world.
"It's very sad that we've had this kind of outcome."

Marian Creek is found within the Fiordland National Park and flows from the alpine lake, Lake Marian, into the Hollyford River.
Lake Marian Falls Track runs alongside the creek.
