Auckland's transport museum was evacuated and checked by police this morning after receiving a threatening email.

A Museum of Transport and Technology spokesperson said they immediately evacuated after receiving the threat.

The museum understood a number of institutions had received similar emails, the spokesperson said.

After they checking the area with the help of police, the museum was deemed safe, and re-opened.

RNZ has also contacted the neighbouring Auckland Zoo for comment.

The NZ Herald reported the Waitangi Treaty Grounds museums were also evacuated after a cyber threat.

Police said they would not be commenting on mass email threats where there was no risk to public safety.
