An investigation is being launched by Greater Wellington Regional Council into a strong odour coming from Lower Hutt's Seaview Wastewater Treatment Plant.

In recent weeks residents near the Wellington Water facility have raised concerns about the stench that has permeated the area.

Wellington Water told RNZ the regional council is investigating the issue and is likely to seek clarification of its cause.

The water provider said it was due to the agency replacing a biofilter to ensure the plant's odour treatment process was working well.

Wellington Water expected the total replacement process to take up to three months to complete, but stronger odours should only be expected for short intermittent periods.

The water provider said Hutt City Council and Wellington Water will continue working closely with plant operator Veolia throughout the works to minimise disruption for residents and businesses.

Greater Wellington Regional Council has been approached for comment.
