Police continue search for missing kayaker off Kāpiti Coast

The search for a kayaker missing off the Kāpiti Coast, north of Wellington, is ongoing.

A woman was seen entering the water on Saturday night in a kayak stolen from a property in Raumati on Friday, and a search was launched but had to be suspended overnight.

It continued on Monday, with staff from the police, surf lifesaving and search and rescue, Coastguard, the Department of Conservation, and the Royal New Zealand Airforce.

On Monday, police released a statement saying they believed the woman was Michaela Leger, 29, from Ōtaki.

"Police are extremely concerned for Michaela and are working to support her whānau.

The woman was wearing a long-sleeved red top and grey trackpants, and carrying a white and pink bag.

Coastguard said she was not wearing a lifejacket.
