Pedestrian dies after hit-and-run in Wellington

A pedestrian has died after being hit by a car on Eastern Hutt Road in Wellington this morning.

The person was critically injured just after 7am and died at the scene, police said in a statement.

Police said the driver involved left the scene immediately and inquiries were continuing to identify the vehicle involved.

Meanwhile, one person died following a crash on Greywacke Road in Harewood, in Christchurch overnight.

A car collided with a power pole just after 1am.

Three other people in the car were seriously injured and were taken to hospital.

Inquiries into the circumstances of the crash have begun, a police spokesperson said.
