A full road closure on State Highway 58 at the end of April will force travellers to use an alternate route and put more pressure on Wellington's other state highways.

Waka Kotahi will be closing Haywards Hill Road between Moonshine Road and Mount Cecil Road from 28 April to 1 May for for safety improvement works.

The Transport Agency said people will need to use State Highway 1 or State Highway 2 via Ngauranga instead.

Waka Kotahi Regional Manager Maintenance and Operations Mark Owen said due to the increased traffic, people should expect delays during this time and allow for longer journey times.

Owen said contractors would be reconstructing a section of the highway as part of the safety improvement project to prepare the road for new median and side safety barriers.

"We realise this closure is inconvenient and frustrating for road users. However, closing the road means a lot more work can be completed more quickly."

He said the alternative was working over multiple nights and weekends using stop/go traffic management, creating greater disruption and even more inconvenience.

Owen said closing the road was also safer for the workers.

Access inside the closure for residents and emergency services would be provided.
