A man who fired shots at police in west Auckland on Friday morning is receiving first aid, after driving himself to a nearby police station and getting shot.

Police said the man attempted to rob a service station in Henderson Valley just after 10am. At least one shot was fired in that incident, but no one was reported hurt.

The suspect left in a vehicle which was tracked by police, firing "multiple" shots, police said.

"He has driven to the Henderson Police Station where he has exited his vehicle holding a firearm and was challenged by armed police staff," superintendent Naila Hassan said.

"The man has not engaged with our staff and has been shot."

She said first aid was being provided, and asked the public to stay away from the area.

A worker near the petrol station said dozens of police have swarmed Henderson.

West AutoTech Repairs director Nand Lal said about 30 officers, including armed police, were patrolling the area.

"I walked out of my workshop and saw all of the cops out. We tried to walk [down] the road and the lady with a gun said, 'You can't go. Just go inside your shop.'"

A worker in the area, David Phillips, said the action came out of nowhere.

"We had a quick look outside and there was already about half a dozen, eight, police cars on the street and about the same sort of number of officers running around with guns which is a bit unusual."
