One person has been found dead after a house fire in a west-central Wellington suburb.

Police were called to assist Fire and Emergency at the Creswick Terrace, Northland property about 7.40am.

A cordon was in place and about five police and five Fire and Emergency personnel were at the property - some in white boiler suits - earlier this morning.

Police and Fire and Emergency will make inquiries into the circumstances of the fire.

The death will be referred to the Coroner.

Neighbour Ruth Nichol said the woman who lived there - who she believed to be the victim - was well known in the community.

She said she was shocked when she got back from her walk to see the cordon and learn someone had died.

"She used to always have a big dog and a little dog, and she'd walk around the neighbourhood and provide advice to other dog owners, apparently very knowledgable about dogs.

"She's certainly become more frail recently, I noticed that the other day, but, you know, this is pretty shocking, what's happened."
