Police have named the man who died at Auckland's notoriously dangerous Muriwai Beach.
He was Dale Harrop, 33, of Auckland.
Police were called to the beach around 4pm on Saturday afternoon after he got into difficulty in the water.
Surf lifesavers brought the person to shore but could not revive them.
The death has been referred to the coroner.
