One person has died following a crash involving two vehicles near Queenstown this afternoon.

The police were called to Crown Range Rd at about 3.20pm.

One person died at the scene and another was flown to hospital in Queenstown with moderate injuries.

The road is expected to remain closed for most of the night.

Earlier today the main road north of Napier towards Wairoa was closed after a serious crash that left one person critically injured and another seriously injured.

A truck and car collided at 10.10am. Police said State Highway 2 was shut between Whirinaki and Devil's Elbow.

The closure was in place for several hours.

Meanwhile, police are looking for a motorist who witnessed a fatal crash on State Highway 1 near Dunedin a fortnight ago.

The collision between a commercial truck and a white Mazda Demio happened about 11km north of the city just before 8am on 16 November.

Driver of the Mazda, Patricia Brook, 75, was killed.

Police said they were seeking the driver of a white van seen travelling north behind the Mazda that morning.
