Police have confirmed a body has been recovered from Lake Wanaka this afternoon.

Emergency services responded to reports of a missing swimmer at the lake around 6.30pm last night after the person failed to resurface.

The police national dive squad searched the area earlier today.

Senior Sergeant Chris Brooks said while formal identification was yet to be completed, police believe they have found the body of the missing swimmer.

Other media have reported the swimmer was a visiting South Korean man.

The swimmer's death was upsetting and had left residents shocked, Wanaka-Upper Clutha community board chair Simon Telfer said.

"This doesn't happen in Wanaka - it's a really safe place for people to come and visit, both internationally and domestically and particularly the lake.

"Calm conditions yesterday, very cold water so we'll just have to see what ended up causing this really tragic incident."

Police said they will make further enquiries about the death on behalf of the Coroner.
