Inquiry begins after police responding to a call hit pedestrian

An investigation is underway after an incident involving a police vehicle that hit a pedestrian near the intersection of Anzac Parade and Victoria Street in Hamilton.

In a statement the police said their vehicle left the station on Anzac Parade with lights and siren activated on its way to an urgent incident about 3.15pm.

The collision happened shortly afterward.

"We are working to establish the exact circumstances of what has occurred," the police statement said.

"We will be providing support to the pedestrian and their family, as well as our staff involved."

The Independent Police Conduct Authority will also be notified.
