A supermarket operator says an attack on staff at a convenience store in Auckland last night was random and unprovoked.

A customer was injured in an alleged knife attack at the Four Square shop in St Heliers at around 7.30pm.

A man in his 20s will appear in court today.

Foodstuffs spokesperson Emma Wooster said the company was extremely thankful no one was seriously injured.

The company was doing all it could to support the customer and staff members, she said.

She said while random incidents like that may not always be preventable, it showed the need to continue focusing on safety.
