A 20-year-old man has appeared in court this morning following a fatal stabbing at the weekend.

Police were called to a Momona address, about 25 kilometres from central Dunedin, on Saturday afternoon after reports of a serious assault.

The victim, who suffered stab wounds, was initially reported to be in a moderate condition but deteriorated while being transported to hospital and arrived in a critical condition.

He later died.

Police said it appeared the pair knew each other.

The 20-year-old accused was charged with murder.

He appeared before a Justice of the Peace in the Dunedin District Court this morning, where he was remanded in custody and granted interim name suppression.

He would next appear in court next month.

A police spokesperson said they were continuing to investigate the circumstances of the incident and a scene examination was completed yesterday.

"We continue to ask that anyone with information that has not already spoken to us, come forward and share that with us."

Anyone with information about the indecent was asked to contact police on 105.
