Protesters who disrupted traffic on Wellington's Urban Motorway yesterday morning have been trespassed.

A group of rail advocates hung a banner and occupied a gantry - a steel structure holding signs across the motorway - on State Highway 1 near Bowen St, closing it to traffic entering the city.

The group's spokesperson James Cockle had said the protest was to demand an expansion of the country's passenger rail network, making affordable rail connections available to all.

They were taken into police custody and referred to a Te Pae Oranga panel, a resolution process for low-level offenders, and trespassed from all motorway gantries.
