The Medical Council is not pursuing complaints made by radiologists against surgeons.

It received complaints earlier this year about 20 or so surgeons who are investing in radiology practices, questioning if this is ethical.

This comes amid what the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists says is "turmoil" over ownership in the sector, and workforce shortages.

The council said it considered any complaints carefully, with public health and safety its top priority.

"Having considered each case thoroughly, council determined that no further investigation was required," its chair Dr Curtis Walker said in a statement to RNZ.

It referred to its guiding statement about doctors and health-related commercial organisations outlines that emphasised the importance of "integrity and being honest and trustworthy".

The council is working on updating this, however, it has stressed it does not regulate business ownership.

The dispute remains before the High Court and the Commerce Commission.
