A man is due in court today after a person who intervened when a woman was being chased in Napier was assaulted and seriously injured.
The victim is in hospital with facial and head injuries.
A police spokesperson said a 'Good Samaritan' stopped their vehicle on State Highway 51 at Awatoto early Sunday morning for a woman being chased by a man, following a family harm incident.
Officers have appealed for information from any witnesses to the assault, about 4.30am, and have asked that any motorists in the area at the time get in touch.
A 34-year-old man charged with assault is due to appear in Hastings District Court today.
