Increased police presence in Gisborne after woman shot dead

Police are seeking information from the public that may assist their investigation into the death of a woman in Gisborne yesterday.

Police were called to a house in Centennial Crescent in the suburb of Te Hapara at about 3.45am yesterday after reports a woman had a gunshot injury.

The woman was dead when they arrived.

A high police presence in the area will continue and Tairāwhiti Police investigators are being supported by Hawke's Bay police," Detective Inspector Dave de Lange said.

"We know any traumatic incident like this is incredibly unsettling for the community and we want people to know they can make contact with us if they have any concerns or want to provide information that might assist."

Specialist staff from the Institute of Environmental Science and Research have been called in by police to assist with a forensic scene examination.

Police are asking anyone with information, including details about any vehicles in the vicinity of Centennial Crescent between midnight and 5am on Sunday 3 July, to call 105 and quote file number 220703/2779.
