Covid-19 update: 20 more deaths reported, 6460 new community cases in NZ

The seven-day rolling average of new case numbers continue to rise, with 6460 new community cases reported today, as well as 20 further deaths.

In today's statement, the Ministry of Health said the seven-day rolling average of new community cases was now 6825, sharply up from 4737 last Saturday.

It said there were now 423 people in hospital with the coronavirus, up from 417 yesterday and from 316 this time last week, with seven people in intensive care. The average age of people in hospital with Covid-19 is 63.

All but one of today's 20 new deaths occurred in the past three days. Five were in their 70s, six in their 80s and nine were aged over 90. Nine were women and 11 were men.

Five were from Auckland region, one was from Waikato, two were from Bay of Plenty, one was from Lakes, one was from Hawke's Bay, one was from Taranaki, one was from MidCentral, one was from Nelson Marlborough, two were from South Canterbury, five were from Southern.

The total number of people who have died with Covid-19 in New Zealand is now 1549.

The ministry said 166 new cases had recently travelled overseas.

There were eight further deaths and 6984 community cases reported in New Zealand yesterday.

There have now been 1,345,175 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in New Zealand.
