The striped dolphin was reported washed up on Kariotahi Beach on Wednesday evening and had been decapitated by the next morning.

The Department of Conservation says while washed up marine mammals are not uncommon, it is expected that people leave them alone.

"What we don't expect is for people to mutilate this treasured species in a disrespectful way for commercial or personal gain. We are actively investigating this incident including reviewing surveillance footage of the area and would appreciate any information from the public," DOC biodiversity ranger Olivia Keane said in a statement.

It is against the law to tamper with them.

DOC is investigating the incident and using surveillance footage from the area to find who was responsible for the mutilation.

Tampering with the body of a marine mammal can result in two-years in prison, or a fine of up to $250,000.
