Body of woman found in sea near Miramar

A woman's body was discovered in the water at Kau Bay, Wellington, this afternoon.

A member of the public noticed the body at about 12.45pm and alerted police.

Her body was recovered by police however her identify is not yet known.

Police are appealing for the public's help in identifying her and want anyone who recognises her description to contact them immediately.

They say the woman is thought to be Māori or Pasifika, of slender build and between the ages of 20 and 35.

She has the words "Ride or Ride" tattooed on her inner left forearm and was wearing a white t-shirt with the initials 'STL' in orange and blue writing on the front.

"At this time we are treating this woman's death as unexplained," Detective Senior Sergeant Tim Leitch said.

"She is someone's daughter, sister or mother and it is vitally important we find out who she is as soon as possible."

Police also want to hear from anyone who may have been on Massey Road today between Scorching Bay and Shelley Bay.

"This can be a busy location especially on a fine day with people travelling along Massey Road or running, walking, cycling or out diving," Leitch said.

"We want to talk to anyone who was in that area up until just before 1pm today and who may be able to assist."
