An investigation is underway after police carrying out a welfare check found two people dead at a property in the Christchurch suburb of Riccarton last night.

In a statement, police said they visited the address on Ayr Street just before 6pm, where they discovered the bodies of a man and a woman.
A scene examination is underway and the property has been cordoned off.
Specialist teams were expected to remain at the scene until tomorrow and a formal identification process was underway, the statement said.
Police thanked the public for their assistance and said they were not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident.
