A man is undergoing surgery in hospital after he was shot by police on State Highway 1 at Dacre, north of Invercargill.

Police said they were seeking the man after an earlier call of concern for a female.
He was found by police shortly before midday and shot after he pointed a weapon at them.
He was taken to hospital in a serious condition where he is undergoing surgery.
Police said State Highway 1 is closed between Kerr Road and SH 98 while they conduct a scene examination.
Motorists have been asked to avoid the area.
