The body of Juliana Herrera, 37, a Colombian national who has lived in New Zealand since 2011, was found on Saturday night.

The 35-year-old farm worker has been charged with murdering Herrera sometime between 21 January and 22 January.

The man appeared in Christchurch District Court via audiovisual link and entered no plea.

His lawyer James Rapley QC sought interim name suppression due to a number of factors, including needing to contact family overseas, and this was not opposed by police.

Name suppression will be reassessed at the man's next appearance before the High Court in Christchurch on 18 February.

The man was remanded in custody.
