A man has been charged with murder following the death of a woman last night in New Brighton.

Police were called to reports of an assault on Hawke Street at 10.40pm last night.
The woman, in her 40s, was found unresponsive by emergency services and died on the way to hospital.
A 43-year-old man has now been charged with her murder.

The man is due to appear in the Christchurch District Court this afternoon.
Police will continue a scene examination near the Countdown carpark in Hawke Street.
