An ambulance was damaged when it was hit by an unmarked St John vehicle on State Highway 1 near Pukeuri, north of Oamaru.

According to Waka Kotahi travel alerts, the crash closed the road for over an hour on Saturday afternoon.

St John rural Otago territory manager David Milne said the unmarked vehicle was driven by an off-duty employee and belonged to an operational manager.

Milne said two ambulances responded to the crash.

"Crews treated three ambulance officers at the scene for minor injuries. One was transported to Timaru Hospital in a minor condition," he said.

He confirmed the ambulance was not responding to an incident at the time nor was it carrying patients.

A police spokesperson said their investigation had finished, and no charges had been laid.

Milne said St John was conducting its own investigation into the incident.

"St John takes the health and safety of its patients and ambulance staff very seriously and is providing support to those involved."
