The Thames-Coromandel District Council is appealing for witnesses after a century-old cenotaph was badly damaged.

A cenotaph at Victoria Park in Thames, erected to honour soldiers from the Coromandel who served in the Boer War, appears to have been deliberately vandalised.

The council said the monument at Victoria Park in Thames appeared to have been deliberately vandalised. Its upper section has been knocked over and smashed.

The cenotaph was erected to honour soldiers from the Coromandel who served in the Boer War in South Africa and the council said police had been notified about the vandalism.

A post on the council's Facebook page said the broken sections were being stored safely while the damage was assessed to see whether it could be repaired.
