One person has died in a two-car crash which has injured five people south of Taupō.

The crash near Motutere, on the south side of Lake Taupō, happened about 7.15pm on Christmas Eve.
One person is in a serious condition and two are moderately hurt.
Another two have minor injuries.
A section of State Highway 1 is closed.
Waka Kotahi said there was a detour in place but motorists should expect delays.
