Police search for missing Wellington kayaker

A kayak has been found in the search for a man reported overdue from a trip on Wellington Harbour.

Jack Skellett, 23, was reported overdue from a kayaking trip around 10pm on Monday 20 December.

Jack Skellett, 23, was reported overdue from the kayaking trip around 10pm on Monday.

He left Petone Beach late that morning it was believed he intended to kayak around Matiu/Somes Island and back to Petone Beach.

His unoccupied vehicle was located in the carpark next to Petone Wharf.

A boatie reported a a likely sighting of him kayaking around the south end of Matiu-Soames Island between 1pm and 2pm.

A blue kayak without the paddle, believed to be Skellett's, was found on the Pencarrow coastline, just north of Hinds Point, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

A search on water and land is focusing on the area between Days Bay and Baring Head.

Wellington police are asking the public to get in touch if they have any sightings or relevant information.
