There are 60 new community cases of Covid-19 today, as concern over the virus continues to spread in Northland and Bay of Plenty. See how the day unfolded with RNZ's live blog coverage.

Microbiologist Siouxsie Wiles is warning people to brace themselves for higher daily Covid-19 numbers after 60 new community cases today.

Dr Wiles says the virus spreads very easily but there are things people can do to stop it.

"Many of the sort of restrictions that were lowered in Auckland, I think we hope they don't contribute much to transmission, like meeting outside. But it's the being outside that's really, really important.

"So there's still wearing of masks, all of kinds of things are the things that we can do in order to stop transmission."

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has continued her visit to East Coast communities to encourage vaccination with a trip to Gisborne this morning.
