Police said the man was located at an Ōtara address on Monday afternoon after breaching his electronically monitored bail.

The man was arrested and began displaying unusual behaviour, becoming aggressive in the patrol vehicle, Superintendent Jill Rogers said in a statement.

He tried to injure himself whilst in the custody unit and continued to display erratic behaviour, she said.

She said police constantly monitored the man and put him in a restraint chair for his own safety before observing that his condition was deteriorating and requesting a doctor.

The man was taken by ambulance to Middlemore Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

There are a number of investigations into the incident and police have notified the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
