In January 2020, the Flaxmere boy was found critically injured, with extensive injuries to his entire body.

He survived, but police said they were some of the most severe injuries they had ever seen on a child.

In June this year, a 32-year-old woman was charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, neglect and assaulting a child.

A 27-year-old man was charged with neglect and injuring with intent.

Today, the Hastings District Court said not guilty pleas have been entered.

Interim name suppression was continued.

The pair will reappear in court in October.
