The 36-year-old man was shot by police at the intersection of Great South Road and the south eastern highway shortly before 11am yesterday. Police said the man who was shot had allegedly stolen a car and then left another motorist with injuries after stealing their vehicle.

In a statement released late this afternoon, police said the man is now facing three counts of aggravated wounding, aggravated assault, burglary, reckless driving and failing to stop.

He will appear in the Auckland District Court tomorrow.

A woman has also been arrested in connection with yesterday's incident. The 36-year-old was taken into custody after they executed a search warrant at a property at Owens Road in Epsom last night, police said.

The woman has been charged with aggravated assault and burglary in relation to yesterday's incident in Penrose.

She is expected to appear in the Auckland District Court today.

Police said help from Victim Support is available to those members of the public who were caught up in yesterday's incident.
