A man has been arrested in connection with the violent assault of a woman at an Auckland shopping centre on Wednesday.

The 41-year-old was arrested in Avondale today.
The 69-year-old woman was parking at the LynnMall shopping centre when an unknown man attacked her, took her phone and tried to steal her car.
She fought back, but he only fled when disturbed by another person, taking the woman's phone.
Police said they would like to thank the public for their assistance.
