One person was killed when their car left the road and hit a tree in Turangi at 11pm Thursday night.
"The sole occupant of the vehicle died at the scene."
State Highway One was temporarily closed and reopened just after 3am.
Police said enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.
