In a statement, the Ministry of Health said there were no new community cases, and no cases detected in managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ).

The ministry said all but five of the 4539 people who recently arrived in New Zealand from Melbourne have been contacted. The remaining five had been referred to people-finding services, it said.

It said 2350 travellers and 178 air crew had returned negative tests, and officials were following up with the rest. Some 1200 people in the group being tested had already returned to Australia, and others were infants who would not be tested, the ministry said.

The ministry provided a list of symptoms for the B.1.617.1 Covid-19 variant seen in the Melbourne cluster, which was first identified in India.

Typical symptoms to look out for include:

  • A new or worsening cough
  • Fever (at least 38˚C)
  • Shortness of breath
  • A sore throat
  • Sneezing and runny nose
  • Temporary loss of smell
  • Some people may present with atypical symptoms, with or without typical symptoms. These include new onset of:

  • Fever
  • Diarrhoea
  • Headache
  • Myalgia (muscle pain)
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Confusion/irritability

Meanwhile, Victoria has reported nine new local cases as the Australian state grapples with a growing outbreak.

Yesterday, the ministry said nearly half of the group being sought for testing in New Zealand after arriving from Melbourne Airport, during the period the state discovered its recent community cases, have tested negative for Covid-19.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has also announced a new naming system for variants of Covid-19.

The ministry said New Zealand labs processed 3055 tests yesterday, for a seven-day rolling average of 4499.

The seven-day rolling average of new cases detected at the border is one.

Four cases had recovered, bringing active cases in New Zealand to 13. Total confirmed cases was 2317.

Since 1 January 2021, there have been 65 historical cases, out of a total of 501 cases.
