Western Bay of Plenty police said the shot was fired just after 3am today.

In a statement, area commander inspector Clifford Paxton said police were searching for a man they identified as Aren Curtis.

Paxton said Curtis, 31, was wanted for failing to appear in court.

Police identified a man they believed to be Curtis driving a black Audi car last night. They signalled the driver to pull over on Truman Lane, Mt Maunganui but he drove off.

Spikes were used to stop the car on Seaspray Drive but the driver got out, ran away and police allege fired a shot at them. Nobody was hurt.

Cordons in the area are been lifted, but police are still searching for Curtis.

They have warned the public he should not be approached.

Paxton said there would be more police in the area today.
