The airline says one of its Star Alliance partners has been impacted by a security data breach.

However, it says the breach is limited to customers' names, tier status and membership numbers because alliance airlines share minimal data.

Customers are asked not to change their passwords or take any other action.

Air NZ says it takes privacy seriously and is working to ensure stronger systems are in place to prevent any similar issues happening in the future.

The Guardian reported that the hack affected hundreds of thousands of airline passengers worldwide.

It said affected airlines included Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa, Malaysia Airlines and United.
