He is Jade Mark Harris, 27, from Naenae in Lower Hutt.

He faces a charge of driving a vehicle carelessly causing injury, not stopping after being involved in an accident, and driving while forbidden.

This morning in Hutt Valley District Court his lawyer did not apply for name suppression but opposed media applications to record proceedings and take pictures.

This will be considered at his next court appearance on 18 February.

Harris has been remanded on bail on the condition he not try to contact the victim or her family and not drive a car.

Anna Chesterfield is in a stable condition in hospital.

Her family say she was walking across a pedestrian crossing when she was struck on 30 January.

They say she is doing remarkably well after having had surgery last week and hopes to be transferred to Hutt Hospital later this week.

A Givealittle campaign has raised more than $12,000 to help with her recovery.
