Christchurch City Council is poised to crack down on the misuse of a popular road's bus lane.

From 1 March, drivers caught in the bus lane on the Main North Road will run the risk of being ticketed.
The council's transport operations manager, Steffan Thomas, said several warnings were given to motorists over the span of a year.
"Between 30 November 2019 and 30 November 2020, the council issued 4443 infringement notices for driving in bus lanes across the city."
Driving over 50 metres will cost $150, and parking during operational bus lane hours will incur a $60 towing fee.
Thomas said those who were non-compliant with the rules "are potentially stopping buses from having a clear route of travel and adding to the journey time of all those on board."
Only buses, bikes, mopeds, motor scooters, motorcycles and emergency vehicles are permitted in designated bus lanes.
