Jesse Samuel from Alexandra suffered carbon monoxide poisoning while showering at his family's bach in Haast in October 2018.

Gasfitter Michael Cartwright signed off on his co-worker's installation of the water heater despite never seeing the work.

The heater was not meant to be used in a bathroom.

Cartwright and the company, Laser Plumbing Alexandra, last year pleaded guilty to charges under the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Act.

Reparation of $70,000 in reparation was also ordered to be paid to the boy's family.
