He was 22-year-old Bram Willems. Police say the investigation into Willem's death continues.

Detective Senior Sergeant Geoff McCarthy said anyone who saw an altercation outside the Work and Income building on Kawakawa's main street around 10pm on Thursday is asked to contact police.

They are also asking for sightings of a silver Toyota Altezza in Kawakawa, Opua and Kerikeri late on Thursday night and Friday.

Information can be given to police via the 105 phone number.

A 14-year-old has been charged with murder and appeared in the Youth Court yesterday and is due to appear in the High Court at Whangārei next month.

Meanwhile, residents of Paihia, 2 kilometres north of Opua, are demanding improved safety measures for the community.

Jane Johnston from the Paihia Ratepayers Association said better lighting, youth facilities and shuttle services from bars could improve safety.

The group is writing to the local police and council asking for help.
